Johannesburg has a lot to offer the outdoor enthusiast- from clay pigeon shooting to abseiling; the region is awash with companies offering you the very best experiences that you could possibly wish for. Outdoor activities in Johannesburg are in abundance.
Horse back riding just outside the city limits has the added advantage of taking you past herds of wild game, such as zebra, wildebeest, buck, and other smaller mammals. Quad biking on a private game farm allows you the same experience, just a bit faster! Enjoy game viewing in a conventional jeep or land cruiser during the day and night. Alternatively, experience the unconventional way of spotting game from the back of an elephant (offered in the Pilansberg National Park and Kruger National Park). Enjoy exhilarating yet peaceful rides over thundering herds in a hot air balloon. Enjoy other activities such as mountain biking and micro lighting.
If time is an issue, the Lion Park, just north of the city, offers a five hour game viewing experience. The park is home to at least 70 lions, including white lions, black and spotted hyenas, an abundance of buck; and a host of other smaller mammals.
Flying in any aircraft in the mild climate that this region offers, is an almost every day occurrence- from low, close formation flying over the city in a combat L39 jet fighter plane, aerobatics high above the city's traffic, or thundering past in a WW2 airplane, the sky?s the limit for airborne adrenalin-seeking junkies! Helicopter charters are also at hand, and they will charter you to any pre-determined destination, morning, afternoon, or dusk.
Learning how to sky-dive, static line courses, or taking a tandem leap with a professional, hang gliding over dams and scenic landscapes, or bungee jumping at the two sites on offer in Gauteng, is all part of the outdoor action located close to the city centre.
Water sports abound with para-gliding, water skiing, cable skiing, and even surfing (offered at the Sun City Resort Complex, Valley of the Waves) is available, as well as kayaking or canoeing on the Vaal or Crocodile Rivers. Boating, boat hire and fishing is a must at the abundance of rivers and dams in Johannesburg.
Golfing in South Africa is huge, with Johannesburg having some of the finest golf courses in the world, just minutes away from the city centre. The Johannesburg Zoo has some unusual residents and this is the only zoo in Africa to house Polar Bears. There is also a night visit which allows guests to get up close and personal with their big cats- set in lush gardens, it is well worth a day out. 4x4 trails, and quad biking trails, set in rugged surrounds, offer families and groups a chance to get away from it all, with some of the companies offering overnight camping as part of the trail fun.
Abseiling, caving, mountain climbing, mountain biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, paint ball games as well as some of the 4x4 and quad biking trails are available in the scenic Magaliesburg region, as well as being in close proximity to the Cradle of Humankind, a true treasure house of anthropological finds.
Even though Johannesburg is in inland city, and is recognized as the business and financial hub of Africa, they have certainly not forgotten how to have fun, and make the most of the gifts they have inherited, by offering the visitor and local alike, an endless array of choices.
